T&T’s MX Prime or Maximus Dan as some prefer to refer to him is proof that you don’t have to be a current mainstream artiste to get respect as an artiste. The ‘Soca Warrior’ singer chose to stay out of the island’s carnival festivities in years prior to 2012 but don’t get it twisted, he’s not out of the game. In fact, MX Prime has been producing his own beats and working on a brand new album.
The artiste told ETCETERABUZZ.COM that he has shifted his focus and is now creating his own productions, focusing on quality rather than quantity. “I choose to be a facilitator rather than someone who wants to reach. Right now I am at the tip of the iceberg because I am doing music for my album and I’m going through with that full-speed ahead. I produced many of my own hits including ‘Burn Out’, ‘Make it Wheel’, ‘Up in the Furness’ and the ‘Real Groove riddim’,” he said, not failing to mention the fact that he had continued to raise the bar throughout the years. Attributing that as one of the reasons he’s one of the most respected artistes in the industry, Maximus said, “I think that people like what I do and appreciate that it is done for a greater purpose.”
His dream for Soca music is for it to eventually become a competing force against other genres. He said, it is in fact a competition locally and possibly across the Caribbean but admitted that there is need for a union to be set up for the representation of artistes, to ensure that each person is treated fairly. “ We need to have a musician’s entertainment union where artistes, dancers and everyone who is related to entertainment can meet in one accord and in a business-like manner and have meetings and draft policies so that corporate sponsors and Government can see that we are serious about the industry. Things like airplay and drafting of contracts for performances, yes some people might think that is a must but we need to make it law so that if these laws are broken, we can refer to it,” he said.
Never a push over, MX Prime said there should be laws for the amount of airplay meted out to local artistes. In the same breath however he acknowledged that artistes are now receiving a bit more airplay locally than they did in years gone by. “Man was created equal but not everyone is equal to each other and that’s a fact. Not everyone can be a Maradonna or a Bob Marley. Somebody’s work could be more exceptional and that’s a fact but at the end of the day, we must reach levels of fairness where no advantage will take place,” he rationalised.
Stressing the importance of a union for artistes in T&T, MX Prime said he’s hopeful that this would materialise. Amid his thoughts of industry however, the artiste who gave the country ‘Make It Wheel’ in 2012, said his album will be released very soon- at latest by May.
