Soca hit maker Machel Montano in an interview on CNMG’s First Up in Trinidad this morning said there are plans underway for his music to be a part of the 2012 Olympics in London. Not wanting to let too much out, the man who took all three major titles in C2K12 said he would be re-writing the lyrics of the Groovy Soca monarch single to reflect his feeling that the athletes of the Caribbean are all champions.
Highlighting that he would be working on an Olympic album from Monday morning, Montano said it would be a soundtrack album aimed at inspiring and accompanying all the Caribbean athletes at the Olypics. “ It’s a major project. We already have three great songs written for the album,” he said, pointing out that the Mr. Fete remake will be sung, ‘champions we name’ instead of ‘feting is we name’.
Montano said the team behind the project is of the view that the Caribbean will take a great prominence in the 2012 Olympics and while the project will target the Caribbean’s Olympic performance, he said it was also an opportunity for the Caribbean to make some inroads onto the world stage in terms of the culture that each island has to offer.
Separately, Montano spoke about what is needed for the overall improvement of T&T’s soca industry. He said the development of quality is required and noted that our artistes and songwriters should be looking at international writers for inspiration and proper technique when it comes to writing lyrical content. “ Let’s have them have workshops with our writers. Let’s improve Soca. Let’s have this national conversation on where should Soca be… but I feel a lot of us are afraid that Soca will go away from carnival or removed from Trinidad,” he said. The artiste who recently shot his video for the single, Bottle of Rum, said artistes like Pit Bull and Flo Ryder had been using elements of Soca in their music and as such, as a nation it was now up to ‘us’ to question how this fact could be developed upon.
Emphasising that everything he does becomes a standard in the industry, Machel who’s Double M album is now in stores, said he is trying to find a way to make five more ‘Machel Montanos’ in the next five years and beyond that ,10 more ‘Machel Montanos’ in the next ten years. He lauded the support of his team as well, and pointed out that his camp was responsible for a number of great achievements from song writing to production in 2012.
