Man quizzed in Michelle’s death

The Jamaica Police have detained a man, who has been described as a person of interest, as investigations continue into the disappearance and death of Michelle Coudray-Greaves. Police are working on a theory Coudray-Greaves, 39, may have been killed elsewhere and dumped in a canefield in Montego Bay, which was set to be harvested.

Canefields are set afire just before reaping to kill off any insects, tall grass and weeds. Adrian Frater, news editor of the Gleaner newspaper, told the T&T Guardian yesterday the detained man had not been labelled as a suspect. "The police are doing some interviews to determine whether or not to upgrade his status as a person of interest into a suspect," he added.

He said he had been told the investigation was at a sensitive stage and the police were reluctant to divulge any information that could compromise the case. Frater said the police had interviewed several people, including Coudray-Greaves' estranged husband, Sean Greaves, close friends and staff at the school where she taught languages.

Sean Greaves, the father of Coudray-Greaves' three children — Danielle, Chanelle and Jonah — is not a suspect. The children attend school in Trinidad and live with their maternal grandmother, San Fernando Mayor Marlene Coudray. Coudray-Greaves' landlady, Gina Haughton, also was interviewed by the police.

Reached by telephone, Haughton said the family and the police had told her not to disclose any information. She said: "It is a very tricky situation as it is and I have to abide by the family's request. The Jamaican Police are working and they are getting some leads." Coudray-Greaves, one of Coudray's two daughters, disappeared on June 2, days after she returned to Jamaica after a vacation in Trinidad, where she spent time with her mother and her children.

A teacher at Cornwall College, she lived at Cornwall Courts in Montego Bay. The body found on Monday evening was identified by her friends through her dental records and a bracelet she wore. Her mother, who was scheduled to fly to Jamaica yesterday, changed flight plans when word came a body had been found.

New arrangements have been made for today when Coudray will arrive with dental records to assist in identifying the body. Frater said although Coudray-Greaves' friends believe the body was hers, her mother held the key to determine whether the body was that of Michelle, her younger daughter. He said the police were examining her telephone records which could assist in finding a motive for her death.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, in a statement, expressed sadness at Coudray's loss. "The terror and pain of a parent to not only outlive her child but to bear such tragic last memories are unimaginable. As a mother and grandmother, I can only imagine the family's immense agony, she said.

Leader of the Congress of the People Prakash Ramadhar also expressed his deepest condolences. "We pray that Almighty Good will give you patience and strength at this difficult time. We hope that you will find some comfort, knowing that we all share in your grief and may Almighty God shower His blessings on you," he said.
