Smokey and Bunty celebrates 23 years
Popular St James Sports and Cultural Bar, Smokey and Bunty (S&B),
celebrated its 23rd anniversary last Sunday, with a crowd reflecting all
creeds and races at the establishment, including a number of diehard
patrons who turned up for the occasion.
Bunty (Ronaldo Munro), who was in a right mood for celebrations on the
night said, "It was good to see patrons who were around in the early days
of S&B's here too."
While he was alive, Bunty's business partner, Smokey (Ricardo Mc Kenzie),
maintained that one of their main objectives as a sports and cultural bar
was to have all forms of entertainment, whether it was the live performance
of soca, calypso, steelband, parang, rhythm section or tassa music. That
was evident during the weekend of celebrations with Siparia Rhythm Section
and Golamsingh Tassa Group making music outside the establishment on
Saturday, then on Sunday it was ten-time National Panorama champions, Witco
Desperadoes and six-time Soca Monarch SuperBlue (Austin Lyons) who also has
eight road march titles to his credit.
Bunty told Newsday: "It was great to make 23 years and I'm looking forward
to making another 23 years because generations will carry it on. It is just
great."
He reminisced about the early days of the establishment and commented,"I'm
missing my partner but his pictures will always be up as he was part and
parcel of it.
His wife, my new business partner is great also. She was willing to go with
me side by side and we really work as a good team."
In summing up the achievement, Bunty stated, "In 23 years other businesses
came and met it (Smokey and Bunty) and have gone but S&B will never die."
