What Is the Best Selling Video Game Console Of All Time?

Answer: The Sony PlayStation 2

In March of 2000, Sony began shipping the PlayStation 2–the second generation of their already wildly successful PlayStation gaming platform. The PlayStation went on to become the most popular console in the sixth generation of video game consoles–a generation comprised on the Dreamcast, GameCube, and Xbox.

That alone would have been enough of an accomplishment to please any company, but the PlayStation 2 proved to be more of a hit with consumers than anyone could ever have anticipated. The PlayStation 2 continued to sell well long after the next generation of consoles appeared (including the PlayStation 3). It sold so well, in fact, that Sony was reluctant to pull the plug on the console and continued to produce and ship them until January of 2013.

Between 2000 and 2013, Sony sold 155 million PlayStation 2 units and 1.52 billion game discs.
