CRIME WATCH host Ian Alleyne spent last night securely behind bars, as four charge warrants were executed on him mere minutes after he was discharged from hospital. Alleyne, who has been at the Hibiscus Suite of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope since last Friday, was discharged by hospital officials at about 4 pm yesterday.

About 20 minutes later, he arrived via police escort at the Port-of-Spain CID head office along St Vincent Street. In the presence of his attorney Om Lalla, four charges were read against the television host.

Three of the charges were for committing breaches of Section 32(2) of the Sexual Offences Act — which states: "A person who publishes or broadcasts any matter contrary to sub-section 1 is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine of twenty-five thousand dollars and to imprisonment for five years." — in relation to the broadcast of the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl on his reality TV crime show aired on TV6 last October. The final charge was for allegedly resisting arrest on Thursday last when a party of police officers from the Port-of-Spain CID, headed by ASP Ajith Persad, went to Express House, Port-of-Spain to interview Alleyne. Newsday was informed that CCN TV6, was served with nine summonses — three in relation to breaches of the Sexual Offences Act (section 32(2)); three in relation to breaches to the privilege of their broadcast licence in accordance with the Telecommunication Act of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) and three for "concession breaches."

The company's managers and/or lawyers are expected to appear before a High Court Judge some time in May.

Speaking to reporters outside of the CID head office yesterday afternoon, Alleyne's attorney Om Lalla said his client was resting well, and was prepared to have his day in the court. "These charges were laid via warrants and after they were read, I applied for bail on his behalf. But I soon learnt the warrants did not permit this. They indicate that he has to be brought before a magistrate as only a magistrate could set bail at this point. So he has to remain in police custody for now," Lalla said.
