Visitors attracted to T&T billboard

A bold and seemingly simple catch phrase, Proud to be Trinbagonian, has captured the attention and hearts of nationals and visitors alike. The billboard located around the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, which advertises this statement has led many people to ask to which ministry or NGO (non-governmental organisation) it is connected. The message is from Sauté Trinbago, a now established cultural event. At first glance, the promotion, Proud to be Trinbagonian (PTBT) may appear controversial because of the number of negative issues, social and otherwise, that are currently being highlighted in T&T. Some may question the reasons for such a profound statement and whether it falls on what appears to be deaf ears. Both the producers of Sauté Trinbago and the company behind the billboard, Cloud Nine Promotions maintain their insight—Proud to be Trinbagonian does not suggest that we are naïve, or indifferent to the negative social issues plaguing our nation. “In the face of those issues, we are inspired to focus on the positive attributes of Trinbago’s culture. “In essence, Sauté Trinbago represents a melting pot of the traditional and popular attractive elements of Trinbagonian culture.”
A spokesperson for the company further states, “The catch phrase PTBT has developed into a life of its own. As nationals, we search for the spark that can shift us from a mindset of dismay to one of optimism and positive emotions. “Entertainment is seen as an integral part of human existence, its social fabric, its culture, and economy. We believe that through entertainment, which captures our national spirit, we can effect positive social change and national growth. “We see Sauté Trinbago, as a showcase of our unique cultural offerings which can be part of the vehicle for social change.” In a You Tube video titled Proud to be Trinbagonian!, entertainment ambassador Machel Montano sports the PTBT t-shirt and gives his testimonial. “After traveling the world and experiencing different cultures, I feel proud to be a Trinbagonian because of our unique style as a people and as a nation. We are multicultural with many creeds, cultures and races coming together in one melting pot.
“I feel proud that we could display all these differences but come together as one for a time like Carnival and then share, experience and display who we are as a united people.” At a time when inspiration, encouragement and positive initiatives are critically needed to boost the morale of a nation, the company sees itself as creating an event that “walks the walk.”
After last September’s showing during the state of emergency, in spite of the premature close of the event by the police officials due to the unexpected gathering of 1,500 plus in attendance, what is next for Sauté Trinbago and its powerful message? The event is carded to be held on the eve of Republic Day 2012 and is filled with what it is popular for—food, music and cultural performances. The latest addition to the list of attractions is fashion.
