A Game Show in Pakistan Is Giving Away Abandoned Babies as Prizes
A game show in Pakistan has drawn both praise and criticism for giving away orphaned and abandoned infants as prizes to contestants. The controversy started after a Pakistani NGO called Chhipa Welfare Association teamed with the Price Is Rights-style game show to award winning contestants with babies. Though the campaign has led to complaints on the organization’s Facebook page, not everyone is opposed to the idea. A children’s rights expert with Human Rights Watch told Yahoo, that though she isn’t familiar with the organization’s vetting process for selecting contestants, she thinks that getting a child out of an institution and into a loving family is a positive thing. She cautioned, “I think probably what triggers the [negative] gut response for people is that, on its face, giving a baby away on a game show doesn't sound like a process of careful determination of what's in a child's best interest.” A representative from Chhipa Welfare Association told CNN, “Our team finds babies abandoned on the street, in garbage bins … So why not ensure the baby is kept alive and gets a good home?” The show plans on giving away another newborn in the coming days…
