Thousands enjoy Point J'Ouvert

Thousands of persons took to the streets of Point Fortin yesterday, during the borough's annual J'Ouvert celebrations, which was dubbed as the biggest event after Carnival Monday and Tuesday. And despite some minor disruptions by persons involved in fights and a few other incidents, the event passed off fairly well.

From just before dawn yesterday, persons from all over the country as well as from abroad converged on the streets of Point Fortin in celebration of its 30th anniversary as a borough.

Over the years the celebration, which consists of many events, has been gaining popularity, with the J'Ouvert taking the lead. In fact, from Friday night, a large number of persons had already gathered in the streets, where many of them remained for the start of J'Ouvert celebrations. Just before the start, the streets were closed off to vehicular traffic and police officers took up strategic positions. The streets were then buzzing with activities as tents were erected at the roadsides and persons selling various types of food and clothing.

From at about 4 am, masqueraders began gathering at their respective band meeting points, ready to display their costumes before a panel of judges in front of the market. Some of the bands included "Royalty The Band", "South Beach Miami", "Jungle Fever" and "Runaway".

Popular soca artistes Neil "Iwer" George, Blaxx and Farmer Nappy performed while on top of trucks which blasted loud music during the celebrations, which was full of outrageous outfits, hairstyles and even dance moves.

And despite the presence of officers from the South-Western Division Task Force, other police stations in the division and the Defence Force, there were several reports of fights and one of a shooting. There were, however, no reports of serious injuries.
