MuzikIzLife - A new twist to Woodford Café nightlife
Shevonne Church is 27-years-old, and for many it is strange to still refer to her as Lil Bitts, the sobriquet she assumed when she delivered the collaborative single, In My Country, alongside Bunji Garlin when she was 18. Today, Church is a full- fledged soca artiste and is exploring every possible facet of media and entertainment in light of the fact that she is getting older and her career choice may be altered because of desires and personal passions.
Muzik of every kind
Church recently started a weekly Wednesday event at Woodford Café, MovieTowne, Woodbrook called, MuzikIzLife—just one of her new initiatives. She was introduced as the newest member of the Synergy TV family, hosting a programme called De Scene on the entertainment television station. For Church, the Wednesday night feature is new territory, but she explained her love for music and her studies at Costaatt has placed her in a unique position to truly appreciate good music and share it with the world. "I'm doing the event in collaboration with Isaac Promotions and Woodford of course," she explained, adding that the management of Woodford Café approached them, requesting their help in doing an event at the hotspot each Wednesday. Church said although they knew Woodford Café was known for an upbeat, party vibe, they chose to go in the opposite direction to create a completely different entertainment scene.
"The MuzikIzLife event is a more laid back type of event. It's a sit down event but if people want to get up and dance, that's fine. But it's not that kind of 'bruk out and wine' kind of event," she said. Wednesday nights will see a mixture of musical genres being exposed, as well as a mixture of age groups, with some newcomers to the music scene as well as some prominent faces. Recently the MuzikIzLife feature brought local reggae crooner Jamelody to the fore. On May 9 the entertainment lineup for the event included jazz and gospel vocalist Nora and 19-year-old Jeanine Ruiz, a UWI student and pianist. "Jeanine is still in school so she was crazy excited about the performance—to be given that opportunity," said Church.
Bridging age barriers
Church said the MuzikIzLife feature caters well to true music lovers. "The first week we had Clifford Charles which is a jazz band and we also had spoken word performer Keagan Maharaj. He was excellent." However, she said the night wasn't only dedicated to vocalists to all musicians, instrumentalists included. With an open mind and an eagerness to embrace new talent, Church said the team has been welcoming new people from all walks of life. "It is open to everybody. People have been messaging me on Facebook and they have been getting my number somehow," she laughed, adding, "and we also have an e-mail address, which is muzikizlifewoodford@gmail.com, where people can contact us."
