Murder after a movie

MOMENTS after having a good time with his girlfriend as they took in the Avengers movie at a cinema, 19-year-old Anton Gordon was gunned down while walking home in Port-of-Spain on Wednesday night.

His brutal killing has not only shocked his relatives but also left them asking questions since, as they said, he was not involved in the gang life and in fact was an honest, hard working and ambitious young man.

Gordon or "Uncle Lick" as he was lovingly called by his nephews and nieces, was on his way home after watching a movie at the Globe cinema with his girlfriend and two other friends when he was shot by two men.

This was the latest and most tragic incident to have happened to the family. In March, his mother's apartment home in Plaisance Terrace in John John, Laventille was firebombed while three years ago, his older brother Deon Skeete was shot dead in John John.

When Newsday visited the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday, Gordon's relatives were in a daze as they tried to figure out why he was killed. A relative who did not want to give her name, said Gordon was a young man who was always willing to work and was trying to better himself. She said he worked in Government's "Colour Me Orange" programme and recently signed up for the Multi-Sector Skills Training (MuST) programme to further his construction skills.

"He was a person who did not want to be on the block playing cards...he was always looking for work, always trying to better himself. He had no beef with anyone and was always trying to make peace with everybody," the woman said.

She said his nephews and niece were Gordon's "eyeballs" and she believes they will grieve more than anyone else in the family. "Everything for them was 'Uncle Lick', what are we going to tell them now? He just gone without saying goodbye to them," she cried.

She noted that Gordon is in a better place and she knows that whatever sins he committed, God forgave him and his killers must now ask God for forgiveness. "We know he is in a better place he has nothing to be afraid of. But those who pulled the trigger (and killed Gordon) better ask God to forgive them because they killed an innocent man who was just trying to improve himself," she said.

According to police reports Gordon of Building Eight Duncan Street, Port-of-Spain was walking along Independence Square North in Port-of-Spain near George Street when at 11.20 pm two men armed with firearms began shooting at him. As Gordon fell to the ground the killers fled in a waiting vehicle. The district medical officer pronounced him dead at the scene and later ordered Gordon's body removed to the Forensic Science Centre, St James for an autopsy.

No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.
