‘El Do’ looks to Lara in intercol
El Dorado East Secondary and Barataria South Secondary will meet in the final of the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) Daren Ganga T20 InterCol Tournament, at 5.30 pm at Guaracara Park. Underdogs Barataria will be depending on national youth batsman Savion Lara, who was named man of the match after top-scoring with 56 in their quarterfinal against defending champions Hillview College. Lara also struck an unbeaten 47 in the semifinals clash against Trinity. Off-spinner Shakeel Johnson will also be instrumental in Barataria's attack after taking three wickets and scoring an unbeaten 39. Assistant manager Kumar Singh said confidence was high. "The team is in high spirits and we have full support from the entire staff and school."
Singh added that victory will be a major achievement for the school. "We are expecting Savion (Lara) to come big again, along with Shakeel, Tion Webster, Marlon Phillips and Christian Singh." In-form Lara said he is looking forward to making his team proud: "I have a bit of form at the moment. The team is backing me and the coach has confidence in me. I am sure I can go out there and do the job." El Dorado, who defeated six-time winners Princes Town West by six wickets to clinch the other spot in the final, would be hoping that W Connection Wanderers batsman Ewart Nicholson also continues his fine form. Nicholson scored 44 in that match. Coach Nigel Maraj said his team is confident but will not take Barataria lightly. The girls final, Naparima Girls High School versus Point Fortin West Secondary, will be held earlier at the same venue, beginning at 2 pm.
