Cooler Fete: Carnival Fashion Don’ts

by: Janine Awai

So the countdown has begun and Carnival is in the air. With the countless cooler parties, upcoming fetes and various limes, we as girls and guys come up with that universal question what should I wear?. Carnival Fashion is a serious topic in Trinidad, we must all leave our house looking the best that we can for the event we are attending.

1st NO HIGH HEELS in a cooler fete. Be practical. Do you want your feet to be killing you by the end of the night? You are not indoors, the floor is most likely going to be ruff and uneven with little holes everywhere. You dont want to twist your ankle or end up with dancers feet where your heels are all busted up and dry and so are your toes. Unless you enjoy your feet looking like you have been walking through mud for the past few hours, I highly recommend you stay again from any type of heels. Yes I understand it may look very cute with that outfit, but why would you ruin a perfectly good pair of shoes just for a cooler fete?, especially in these economic times.
2nd A next thing, like people forget that we live in Trinidad, NO WINTER BOOTS or NO FLAT BOOTS.

Why in heavens name would you wear Boots to a cooler fete. I highly doubt youre going to get cold standing next to the cooler. THESE BOOTS NEED TO STOP!!! Like come on girls!!! DROP THE BOOTS!! I think it has been worn out a bit too much!! Everywhere I turn I see these boots!!! I completely understand if you are at an all inclusive fete or you are out at the club and you want to wear a pair of LOW CUT HEELED boots that go great with your skirt, dress or pants. If you do wear high cut heeled boots please stop and think, Is this appropriate for the occasion? and I think I should put these under my long jeans to give a more of a classy yet bad ass kind of look.

3rd Nothing is wrong with sneakers. YES SNEAKERS!! Converse on girls do look good(quite bess). Nothing is wrong with looking cute, down to earth and comfortable. You dont have to worry about people stepping on your toes! Girls, guys do enjoy a girl that can tone it down a bit, we dont always need the heels and sandals to get a guys attention!

4th Short PANTS yes pants, NOT SKIRTS in a cooler fete I do not think so, maybe back then yes but in these days no its not. Girls we are all independent ladies and like to roll on our own at times and we get caught up and forget the basics of fashion safety. Short Skirts in a fete any, is a dangerous thing. With the crime rate these days we must make sure that we as Women are not subject to men that may have a few things lose in their heads. So please when leaving your houses, project yourself, not only looking out for people but what you are wearing also. Do not make it easy for them if they do decide to lose a few screws.
5th The over use of MAKE UP has got to stop! Dont wanna leave the house with a face that looking like its not yours ? If you are going to a cooler fete why would you need to cake on make up for it to be literally dripping off your face with sweat and rain and whatever else is flying at you in there. All inclusive parties fine no problem. But be real and think about your make up choices
.
With all that said, Ladies remember less is more. I have complete faith in you guys that you all know how to swag it out to the fullest. This Carnival lets make it Classy and not Trashy. Keep the fashion modern and make your own statements. Nothing Lady Gaga-ish or Nicki Minaj like, but your own individual style with a modern twist.
Have a safe and wonderful Carnival !
