Rumor: Nutella has less nutritional value than cake frosting

The spread is popular, but it turns out it packs precious little in the way of nutrition.

CONFIRMED: Nutella is about as healthy as a candy bar.

ABC examined Nutella and other unhealthy foods. They found that "Nutella's about as healthy as a Milky Way."

Turns out that one tablespoon of Nutella has 100 calories, six grams of fat, two grams of saturated fat and 11 grams of sugar. Compare that to an average, no name brand of frosting, which has 75 calories, three grams of fat, one gram of saturated fat and 7.5 grams of sugar.

UNHEALTHY ADVERTISING

One woman actually took the makers of Nutella to court over their advertising of the spread as a healthy breakfast treat – and won, according to CBC news.

A class-action lawsuit in California objected to advertisements that portray Nutella as healthy. Ferrero, the maker of Nutella, eventually settled the lawsuit. It will pay out about $2.5 million. Anyone who bought Nutella between January 2008 and Feb. 3, 2012 is entitled to a piece of the settlement.

But Nutella isn't the only culprit.

Sports drinks also made ABC's list. The report acknowledges that they are good after an extremely hard workout, such as a marathon, but otherwise are so full of sugar that they can rot your teeth.

Even "all-natural" cereals and energy bars made the list. Those "natural" cereals actually use genetically-modified ingredients in some cases. As for the energy bars – they do provide a post-workout boost, but most likely it’s little more than a sugar rush.
