Pellau Magazine: Machel to perform in White House

Leading Caribbean superstar Machel Montano will perform at the White House in Washington, DC on Friday on the special invitation of US President Barack Obama, it has been announced.

Montano, a Trinidadian soca singer, was asked to perform in celebration of June 2011 being declared National Caribbean American Heritage Month.

The month celebrates the integration of Caribbean nationals into the American society while still maintaining their cultural identity, the White House said in a statement.

In an excerpt from the proclamation, the Obama administration stated: "The fabric of our nation has been woven together and enriched by the diversity of our people.

"Our legacy as a nation of immigrants is what makes America strong, and during National Caribbean American Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich history and vibrant culture Caribbean Americans have brought to our shores."

As part of the celebration, Montano, who is widely regarded as the leading Caribbean soca performer out of the Caribbean today and, according to the White House "is also well loved as an ambassador of Caribbean culture in North America", was invited to perform on June 24 between 11a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Following his trip to Washington, Montano will be in Toronto for several shows leading up to the annual Toronto Carnival celebration.
